Other than the obvious relaxing, reading books, sightseeing, bird watching and spotting all the wild animals there is more to do for the active minded. You may walk, run or mountain bike the full distance of The Farm. To drive the entire farm, a 4×4 is required.
A short and scenic 12km drive away are our local pubs – The Pig and Whistle (“I had a swig at the Pig”), that boasts to be the oldest licensed pub in South Africa – The Ploughman Pub, based at the Agricultural Museum and the Bathurst Arms where you can karioke your heart out. The Bathurst residents are a friendly lot and the food and banter is guaranteed to be of a high standard. Visit the largest pineapple in the world where you can learn all about pineapple farming. Arts, crafts, pottery and paintings are available in the various shop. There are a number of historical sites in this Fronteir Country – Bradshaw’s Mill is highly recommended.
Port Alfred (30 km’s from The Farm) on the Sunshine Coast on the beautiful Kowie River has lots to offer. All types of outdoor and water activities are on hand with beautiful river access and amazing beaches. The are is home to really good restaurants, museums and plenty of retail outlets for shopping. 43 Flight school just outside Port Alfred and is the largest pilot training facility in the southern hemisphere with students from all over the world.
Historic Grahamstown “the City of Saints” is just 26 kilometres away and is steeped in history. Take a slow drive and see the numerous Churches and Schools. Don’t miss the National Arts Festival each year in June.
Other highly recommended visits include Three Valley’s Protea Farm, Two Waters Meeting Nature Reserve (where the river and sea meet), Bradshaw’s Mill, Giant Pineapple, Agricultural Museum, the Powder Magazine.
